Principal's Message
On Monday, our staff came together on the student-free day to examine and refine Trinity College's Learning and Teaching Strategic Plan for the next three years. At Trinity, we are constantly striving to improve every aspect of what we do and having clearly articulated goals and outcomes for our core business, teaching and learning, is essential. The day gave staff an opportunity to reflect on our current practices, celebrate our strengths, and identify the priorities that will continue to drive improved outcomes for all students.
As part of the day, we welcomed Education Consultant Kirstin Bourne, who worked with staff on the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence in education. While AI provides many opportunities, Kirstin challenged us to consider its effect on students' ability to retain and recall knowledge. One key message from her presentation was that, in many cases, the solution may lie in returning to more traditional learning approaches. Encouraging students to spend more time learning with pen and paper, rather than relying exclusively on devices, can strengthen memory, engagement, and understanding. It was a thought-provoking session and one that will undoubtedly influence our future teaching practices.
On the sporting field, Trinity students continue to achieve outstanding success. In fact, 2026 may be one of the most successful years in our school's history, with teams progressing to State Finals. Congratulations to our Junior Girls Netball Team, Senior Girls Netball Team, Senior Girls Basketball Team, Junior Boys Soccer Team, Intermediate Boys Soccer Team, Junior Girls Soccer Team, Junior Boys Football Team, and Senior Boys Football Team, all of whom have qualified for the State Finals.
This week brought even more excitement, with our Senior Boys Football Team winning both their quarter-final and semi-final matches to secure a place in next week's State Grand Final. We wish them every success as they prepare for this significant occasion. While we are incredibly proud of the results our teams achieve, what impresses me most is the way our students represent Trinity. They play with determination, humility and respect, always competing in the right spirit and making our school community proud.
This week we have also been celebrating National Science Week. Our Science Leader, Mrs Casey Kelly, organised a range of activities to engage students and promote curiosity in the sciences. Activities included Science Trivia competitions, interesting food tasting experiences, and hosting students from St Brendan's Primary School for a series of exciting science demonstrations. Thank you to Mrs Kelly and our Science staff for creating such an engaging and enjoyable week for our students and visitors.
Next week, a group of our Year 11 students will head to Mt Hotham for our annual Ski Trip. We wish them a safe, enjoyable, and memorable experience, and we're all hoping for a little more snowfall before they arrive. Outdoor education experiences such as this provide students with opportunities to challenge themselves, build resilience and strengthen friendships. I would like to sincerely thank the staff who are giving their time to accompany the students: Mr Tomkins, Mrs Hawker, Mrs Gill and Mr Barnett. A special thank you also goes to our wonderful cooks, Mrs Parker and Mrs Marwood, whose efforts help make the trip such a success each year.
Finally, I would like to provide families with some information regarding the upcoming education sector pay increases and how they may impact Catholic schools, including Trinity College. I fully support teachers and education support staff being fairly remunerated for the increasingly complex and challenging work they undertake every day. However, Catholic schools receive approximately 80% of their funding from the Federal Government, and those funding arrangements are currently locked in until 2029. This means that the forthcoming pay increases will effectively be unfunded for Catholic schools.
At Trinity College, we remain committed to keeping school fees as affordable as possible for our families and do not anticipate fee increases beyond those that would normally occur. Consequently, we will need to identify savings in other areas of our budget to absorb these additional costs. At this stage, we are still awaiting final details of the new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement, including salary increases and changes to employment conditions. Once these details are confirmed, we will be in a position to begin making informed decisions about how these additional costs will be managed.
Importantly, we remain committed to delivering the highest quality learning experiences for our students and continuing to improve our facilities. We are still hopeful that construction of the new Rice Wing will commence sometime next term as part of our long-term Master Plan. While the new agreement will undoubtedly place additional financial pressure on the College, we will work diligently to manage these challenges responsibly and will continue to communicate openly with our families about any decisions that need to be made. I expect we will have a much clearer picture of our position by the time the next newsletter is published.

Thomas (Year 12) Takes on the World Stage
Thomas (Year 12) Takes on the World Stage
We caught up with Year 12 student Thomas, who recently represented Australia at the U18 Kayak World Championships, competing against some of the best young paddlers from around the world. Thomas reflects on the challenges, highlights and lessons from competing on the international stage, as well as his journey balancing elite sport with Year 12.
The Trinity College and Colac community is very proud of you. What was it like walking onto the world stage and competing against the best athletes from around the globe?
It was pretty nerve-racking, but having experienced the same thing last year made it a bit easier and more familiar. Having an individual event this year was different because I was alone in the race, which was a new experience.
Finishing 18th in the world in the U18 K1000 and coming 7th in the semi-final in the U18 K4 is an incredible achievement. Looking back, what are you most proud of?
The conditions weren’t that great during the week of competition. There was a strong headwind, and the water was bumpy, but getting through the heats and semis in those conditions made it tougher, and I was happy to reach the placings we did despite the elements.
Was there a particular race or moment during the championships that you'll never forget?
Making new friends from around Australia and from other countries and being able to race with and against them. Also being able to get advice and talk to older people on the team who are Olympic medallists.
Balancing elite sport with school can be demanding. How do you manage your training, competitions and studies?
It’s a bit of a juggle, sometimes you have to sacrifice one to put your focus on the other, it’s hard to balance because you can’t always slit your time 50/50 but knowing which is more important at that moment in time and focusing on it helps, my teachers are all very good as well at rescheduling SAC’s if needed which makes it easier when I am away competing.
Who has had the biggest influence on your kayaking journey so far, and why?
My coach, Sean from Geelong. I wouldn’t have gotten to this level without his careful guidance and support, and without my family getting me to this stage and supporting me to go overseas.
After competing on the world stage, what goals have you set for yourself next?
Next year I go up an age group and will be racing Olympic gold medallists, so my goal is to get through Year 12 while trying to improve again before next season. It will be hard to break into an older age group, but seeing the level of competition overseas has inspired me to train even harder.
Is there anyone you would like to thank?
All of my teachers who have made school easier alongside competing, as well as all of the support from the school and community.

Doco in a Day
Doco in a Day
Four Trinity College teams took part in Doco in a Day last semester, creating short documentaries to raise awareness and funds for the Edmund Rice Foundation (ERF), which supports education and opportunities for marginalised communities around the world.
Our students put their creativity, collaboration and storytelling skills into action, raising $340 for the ERF. One team was also awarded Highly Commended for creativity, storytelling and impact. A fantastic achievement and a great example of our students making a difference beyond the classroom.

Upcoming Trinity Day - Thursday 17 September
Upcoming Trinity Day - Thursday 17 September
Trinity Day is fast approaching and promises to be a meaningful celebration of generosity, compassion and service. As our major fundraising event for the term, Trinity Day reflects the heart of our Catholic charism and the legacy of our founders, Edmund Rice and Catherine McAuley, who dedicated their lives to serving others with compassion, justice and dignity.
The day gives our school community an opportunity to live out our Touchstone values by supporting those most in need. All funds raised throughout the day, including gold coin donations and stall proceeds, will go to St Vincent de Paul and the Colac Salvation Army, organisations that work tirelessly to support people experiencing homelessness and hardship in our local community.
Trinity Day is a whole-school event, and all students are required to attend. Festivities will begin with an assembly, followed by a full afternoon of activities, food vans, games, competitions, and student-run stalls. Highlights include staff versus Year 12 sporting matches, the ever-popular House Dance Competition and an Ice Bucket Challenge.
Students are invited to wear their favourite sports attire or dress as their favourite sporting star for the day. We also encourage students to bring along some money to enjoy the food vans and support the many stalls and activities on offer.
We look forward to coming together as a community to celebrate, have fun and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Further details regarding the stalls and food vans will be shared in the coming weeks.
