Term 3 is always an important part of the school year – every term plays a significant role in the journey but we can be forgiven for considering the penultimate term feels somehow more hefty than the others.
Our senior students particularly feel the weight of their assessments and our Year 12 cohort is preparing for their final days that come up swiftly next term. This week we bid farewell to our VCE Vocational Major and our unscored VCE students who will embark on the next phase of their lives. Their early finish to the year is designed to give them a head start into apprenticeships, traineeships, and employment opportunities. In addition, Term 4 is all about examination preparation for VCE students as all course work is completed by the end of Term 3.
This term is also typically cold, wet and windy and this can bring down even the most stalwart of constitutions. Students and staff have been off with various illnesses and I really have to thank our fantastic relief teachers who are sometimes called to come in at very short notice. Thank you also to our incredible students who have maintained a positive outlook and carried on playing sport, performing on stage, providing service to our community and striving to be the best they can be in the classroom.
Winter can be tough and our families have shown their warm hearts by responding to St Vinnies’ request for non-perishable food items to distribute to people in need. Our Social Justice Coordinator, Mr James Fitzpatrick, has taken the tubs of donations down to Vinnies and we thank you all for your compassion and assistance in making a difference in someone’s life.
Trinity Day is today and it is not only a fun and festive end to Term 3, it is also a significant fundraising opportunity for us to show our true colours as a school that values social justice. The proceeds from the day go to our chosen charities that provide incredible service in our communities: Edmund Rice Camps, MacKillop Family Services, Mercy Foundation and St Vincent de Paul. We are very grateful to our families for their support because we have seen first-hand the massive difference these organisations make for the vulnerable.
Organising Trinity Day is a big job and I congratulate our staff on taking it in their stride. It is also a fantastic opportunity for our upcoming student leaders to shine. Student leadership is about serving the school and broader community and working on behalf of the entire student body to provide a voice for positive change. I thank our 2024 leaders for the manner they have led the students this year, for the role models they have been and for the time they have devoted ensuring they have had a positive impact on Trinity College. While the year is not complete, the Year 12 cohort’s focus is now on their upcoming examinations and it is time to elect and commission our next group of student leaders. This week all students who nominated for a leadership position introduced themselves to their peers in Years 10 and 11 and outlined their priorities for 2025. Before the end of term, staff and Year 10 and Year 11 students will vote for next year’s College Captains, Vice Captains, House Captains, Performing Arts Captain and Student Representative Council (SRC). I would like to congratulate all students who put their names forward; this alone takes courage, as does standing up in front of a large audience to outline their hopes and goals. It is an exciting time for them, and for us as we witness their development into young adults, and we know everybody is eagerly anticipating the results that will be announced early in Term 4.
During the break, VCE teachers will be running trial exams to prepare our students for their Unit 4 examinations, which will be here before we know it. In the past, these initiatives have proved to be extremely valuable in providing a sense of confidence with both the process and content and we anticipate that most VCE students will make the most of this opportunity. In between, we urge our senior students to keep exams and assessments in perspective – keep an eye on the goal and do your best because your best is certainly good enough.
Our staff provide incredible support for the academic and personal growth of our students and you may be aware of the concerning rising statistics of teacher burn-out that have been circulating in the media. A report by the Black Dog Institute found that almost half of Australian teachers were considering leaving the career they studied years for, with the data suggesting that it is a profession in crisis with longer working hours and fewer resources. There have been unusual contributing factors to the increase in stress levels in teachers including COVID-19, increased compliance requirements and colleagues who are abandoning the system, but the bottom line is that we need to do what we can to protect the people who provide essential services for our children. The Right to Disconnect legislation offers relief to employees who feel obliged to take work-related calls or read messages after they finish their day’s work and we support our staff’s choice in whether they respond to after-hours communications. There is more information later in this Newsletter and if you have any further interest in the topic, have a look at the Fair Work Ombudsmen website that provides a succinct summary of the law with further links.
Finally, thanks to our families for your ongoing support of all that we do here at Trinity. Please stay safe and well and we will see you all refreshed for next term. And may the best AFL team win!

Preparing for Exams
Preparing for Exams
As we enter the final term of the school year, our Year 12 students are preparing for their upcoming VCE exams and making important decisions about their future. Whether they are focussed on study or exploring pathways into work, this is an important and exciting time for all.
Over the school holidays, practice exams for Unit 3 and 4 subjects will be held in the Tuck Wing , and students have received their timetables for these sessions.
Teachers have also been making sure students are equipped with study skills and revision strategies to ensure they feel confident and prepared.
Key dates to remember include the VCE external exams , which will begin on 29 October, and university applications , which need to be submitted in the coming weeks. We encourage students to stay focussed and use all available resources to support their preparation.
Trinity is committed to providing the support students need during this important time. If you have any questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact the school. We are here to help!

Celebrating Community
Celebrating Community
As we near Trinity Day at the end of the week, a special liturgy was held on Tuesday to celebrate the rich heritage of Trinity College and its unique place in the Colac community.
The College Leaders conducted the liturgy with the added poignancy that it was their final appearance as a leadership group in front of the student community.
Fr Michael praised the Year 12 students' commitment to their journey, blessing the graduands and wishing them success in the coming months as they prepare for exams, assessments and the workforce.
A special photo-montage was played, highlighting the past and present life of Trinity College, and providing reflection on the history of the College that stretches as far back as 1880 when the Sisters of Mercy opened St Joseph's College.
Trinity Day on Friday will be the Year 12 VCE VM and unscored VCE students' final College celebration until they return for their formal graduation in November.
Working Towards Excellence
Working Towards Excellence
Six Trinity students were privileged to be part of an exciting workplace learning program designed to develop skills to problem solve, work in a team and build self-confidence working with real life issues.
Hosted by AKD and run by Mindshop facilitators, the Mindshop Excellence program presented real life problems for Kiara, Angus, Josh, Mason, Eliza and Sara to work together and come up with a solution. At the end of the week, their findings were presented to AKD employees and management, Mindshop Excellence facilitators, Trinity College staff and their parents, providing great experience in teamwork, leadership, problem-solving and communication.
Thank you to AKD, Barry and the Mindshop Excellence program for their continued support in the development of our young people into being the best they can be. Together we make a difference.
"Wow, what a week it was. We've learnt some lifelong skills that will definitely help in our futures and we were able to go and do something different. The consulting skills were put to use and we were able to help AKD with new ideas about what they could do better. Throughout the week we made great connections with each other and found some awesome contacts for the future. Sometimes you really just need others who aren't aware of the situation to come in and suggest some new ideas. I'm not the only one but I really enjoyed my week with AKD and Mindshop, even though we had to wear blazers for the presentation (they really aren't that bad).

Year 12 Girls versus Staff Football
It was a blustery day for the Year 12 girls versus Trinity staff football game on the oval with the youngsters seizing victory in the match of the year!
Well done to everybody who braved the weather to play, umpire and watch – the smiles say it all!

Year 12 Boys versus Staff Netball
Year 12 Boys versus Staff Netball
Year 12 boys took on Trinity staff in the traditional annual game of netball with both teams playing with equal enthusiasm that resulted in a bit of skin off Mr Fitzpatrick as he hit the deck. The Year 12 students disregard for the rules had little effect on the outcome, with staff claiming victory!

Communication with Trinity staff
Communication with Trinity staff
As part of our commitment to promoting a healthy work-life balance at Trinity College Colac, we wish to advise parents, carers and students of the guidelines regarding contacting teachers and support staff after hours.
We know that questions or concerns may arise outside of school time and appreciate that sending an email or Teams message in the evening or weekend is an opportunity to address the topic immediately. However, the health and wellbeing of our community is a priority at Trinity and we know that our College families will understand that staff are not expected to respond to these communications outside of their working hours. Occasionally staff may choose to reply to messages but this is entirely at their own discretion and they are not obliged to do so.
Our teachers and support staff work diligently to support the academic and personal growth of our students during the school day and will respond to your communication as soon as they can during work hours that are listed below.
Teacher work hours at Trinity College are as follows:
Monday and Tuesday – 8:30am to 4:30pm
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday – 8:30am to 3:30pm
Please note that part-time and support staff work hours vary but are usually no earlier than 8:30am or later than 4:00pm.
Families should note that this does not apply to the College absence phone line. This line is available to receive messages 24 hours a day.
Should you have any questions or concerns about these guidelines, please contact the College on 5233 9200.

Please ensure ALL components (computer, bag and charger) are returned to the College.
Students with unreported damage to the College computer must contact the ICT department as soon as possible to avoid delays. As stated in the College Computer Loan Agreement, any damage requiring repair/replacement or intentional graffiti to computers will incur an excess charge.
