          Trinity College Prayer

          Loving God,
We give thanks for the gift of life.
May Trinity College be a community for learning,
new discoveries and the pursuit of wisdom.
Grant that those who teach and those who learn
honour your presence in all creation as we respect
          and look after our environment.
May we learn from the example of Jesus and be open
to the power of the Holy Spirit.
May the virtues of faith, hope and love inspire us
so that we make a difference through our kindness,
          mercy and compassion for all.

          Amen

Mother of Mercy pray for us.
Live, Jesus, in our hearts, forever!

          Principal's Message

Welcome back to Term 2 and the cooler weather! It was wonderful to see the students step back on to campus last Monday and to feel their energy as they greeted their friends and teachers. On the second day, our 45 Top End Tour participants, accompanied by Sarah Borch, Rina Hamdemir, David Miller, Grace Wiedemann and myself, flew out to the Northern Territory and have already experienced the wonder and awe of Uluru. We have had many adventures and we look forward to sharing them with you.

Last term we celebrated heading into the holidays with a wonderful College Easter liturgy that highlighted so many of our Trinity values. Our Year 10 students led the beautiful ceremony, inviting their Trinity peers to walk the journey with Jesus as he entered the final days of his life on Earth. We are very appreciative of this performance experience and thank Trinity alumnus Thomas Billing from the Class of 2023 who took on the major role and also Mrs Caroline Grist and Mr Daniel Rodway for directing and scripting the production. Most of all, we thank the Year 10 cohort for sharing their learning in such a profound and immersive way. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our faith tradition. The following day, on Good Friday, Trinity led the Way of the Cross for the Colac community ecumenical service of the Stations of the Cross in the Botanical Gardens, which was very well attended.

This term is an opportunity for students to really focus on their learning goals with our Year 9 Aspirations Day paving the way for some reflections on the future. We were privileged to have former Australian marathon runner, Steve Moneghetti, as our keynote speaker for the event, as well as several Trinity alumni coming in to share their stories. Inviting back our past students was a profound way to inspire our students to be courageous and take risks in deciding their future. As the owner of Colac Tenpin Bowl Luke Shalley said to the Year 9 students, it is the support and  encouragement of family, friends and the people at Trinity that makes the difference, and that sometimes the path to your own personal brand of success is not the one you first embark on.

At Trinity, we partner with our families to develop our young people into the best they can be, and our visiting alumni are outstanding examples of this. With this in mind, I really encourage families to attend our Student Learning Conversations on Wednesday 1 May. These important sessions provide a valuable opportunity for parents to share in their child’s learning journey and research shows that the most important impact on student success is support and understanding from home. We cannot stress this enough and hope to see as many of you as possible attend.

          Have a great weekend!

          Community Inspires Year 9

At Trinity College Colac, hands-on experience and real-life stories from our community aimed to inspire our Year 9 students to reach for the stars with their future goals.

Our Year 9 Aspirations Day kicked off with motivational speaker Steve Moneghetti, who has represented Australia at the highest level in long distance running. Steve has a degree in civil engineering, a graduate diploma in education and an honorary doctorate from the University of Ballarat, and has been inducted into Sport Australia Hall of Fame as a general member, but was once considered to be a mediocre runner in primary school. His lessons from a life on the road and advice that, with the right plan and a strong work ethic, you can achieve things you never dreamt possible started the day on the right foot for the fascinated students.

The session was followed by team building exercises to keep everyone on their toes and in the afternoon the students were entertained and inspired by a panel of Trinity alumni and present students who shared the secret of their own personal brand of success.

With the theme of ‘Why Not?’ Colac Tenpin Bowl owner Luke Shalley (Class of 2021), AKD Human Resource Administrator Meg Nelson (2020) and Ray White Real Estate salesperson Rhyley Edge (2018) were joined by Year 12 students Isabella and Matilda Mason who are already running their own thriving coffee van business, Double Shot, to share tips about making the most of opportunities, big and small.. MCs for the event, past Trinity student Jimmy Thwaites from 106.3 MixxFM Radio and his Breakfast Show partner, Lippy, kept it real with lots of questions and their own stories of how they found their calling.

The presentation allowed the students to understand the risks and courage of the past students who were once sitting in the same classrooms, and to appreciate the value of the support of their friends, family and College as they ponder their future.

          Honouring Anzac Day

          Honouring Anzac Day

Trinity College celebrated Anzac Day with a special assembly that honoured the sacrifice of the men and women who have participated in armed conflict in service of their country.

Special guest speaker, Teghan Fraser, shared the story of her 15-year career in the Australian Navy, highlighting the incredible service the armed forces still provides today and every day.

The College House Captains laid wreaths at the front of the assembly and the students stood to attention in respectful silence as The Last Post rang out around the campus.

The Student Leaders then attended the ceremony at Memorial Square, laying the wreaths along with their peers from other local schools.

          Lest we forget.

          Teenage Bullying: How to Help

          Social Media and Teenagers

          Social Media and Teenagers

Social media has become such an integral part of a teenager’s life that it can cause anxiety and lower their self-esteem. Modern teens are learning to do most of their communication whilst looking at a screen instead of another person. They are missing out on very critical social skills.

And dependant on what they are communicating online, it can affect their digital reputation. Friendships, relationships, and even future job prospects are all at risk. As a parent, it is very important that you are aware of what picture they are painting of themselves online.

Once information makes its way online it can be difficult to remove. Images and words can be misinterpreted and altered as they are easily and quickly shared around. Privacy settings on social media sites need to be managed in order to protect your child’s digital reputation.

          Trauma Recovery

          Trauma Recovery

As a result of the devastating events that unfolded at Westfield in Bondi Junction and the Church in Wakeley, many families are in a state of disbelief trying to comprehend how and why these incidents occurred. All of us have been affected in some way, with some left more traumatised than others.

Although such incidents are rare, they can still be scarring. It's in these situations that it is vitally important for parents and carers to check in with their children. Being aware of what information they've been exposed to will hopefully minimise their emotional fallout in coming weeks.

Trauma in children significantly disturbs their sense of safety and normalcy, leading to substantial emotional and behavioural changes. Such disturbances often result from exposure to traumatic events, which may be exacerbated by continuous media coverage. This exposure can trigger stress, anxiety, and trauma, with varying recovery timelines due to the unpredictable nature of trauma's impact. Observing young people grappling with these effects can be highly distressing for parents and caregivers.

It is important to establish a nurturing environment to help restore a child's sense of security to help promote resilience. Active involvement in their recovery is essential, as is recognising the unique, personalised needs of each child in responding to trauma. Depending on their age, children may present with different symptoms, such as regressive behaviours in younger ones or withdrawal and agitation in older children and teens. It is important to monitor and manage the type of information children may access to reduce their emotional distress.

The brain stores traumatic events as powerful emotional memories, influencing behaviour through mechanisms beyond a child's conscious awareness. By providing young people with support and equipping them with coping mechanisms to handle uncertainty, parents and carers can greatly enhance a child's capacity to recover and build long-term emotional resilience.

SchoolTV’s Special Report will help you identify a child experiencing trauma and how you can support them to overcome it.
