Principal's Message
To celebrate the start of the 2025 school year, our community gathered for two special Commencement Masses on 11 February. These meaningful ceremonies marked the beginning of the year and provided an opportunity to welcome our new staff as they committed to their roles within our Catholic community.
We were also pleased to welcome Fr Andrew Hayes, who led our community in prayer for the first time, along with distinguished guests including Mr Richard Riordan, the State Member for Polwarth, Mayor Jason Schram of Colac Otway Shire, and Sr Marg Carmody.
The Commencement Mass is a significant tradition that unites us in faith and reflection, setting a strong foundation for the year ahead.
I am pleased to report that all students have made a positive start to the 2025 school year. Last Thursday I had the opportunity to visit the Year 7 camp at Kangaroobie alongside Mrs Holt, Mr Rathgeber, and several of our Year 12 student leaders. Feedback from both the camp staff and our Trinity staff indicated that students were not only enjoying their experience but consistently exhibiting respectful behavior. I was also delighted to see a strong turnout of parents and carers at the Year 12 Information Evening and the Year 7 Information Evening. I trust that these events were informative and offered an excellent opportunity to interact with the staff who will be closely supporting your children this year.
One important point I emphasised during both parent information evenings was that it is our parents and families who have the most significant impact on student learning. Simple actions such as discussing school activities with your child, providing a suitable and distraction-free environment for homework, encouraging them to strive for excellence, remaining engaged with the school by attending events, regularly checking their progress on PAM and reading the College Newsletter, all convey a clear message to children about the importance of education. Your involvement will greatly enhance their educational journey.
I was informed late last week that our Psychologist, Paige Turner, will be departing from Trinity College at the end of March to accept a position with a non-profit organisation in her home state of Western Australia. While we will miss Paige greatly, we fully understand her desire to return to family. On behalf of the entire Trinity College community, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to Paige for her contributions to our school and the support she has provided to numerous students throughout her tenure. We will be initiating the search for her replacement in the coming weeks.
Finally, I encourage as many Years 8 and 9 fathers and male role models as possible to attend the Time & Space evening scheduled for Wednesday 26 February. Having attended several of these events over the years, I highly recommend the experience. As the name suggests, the evening provides an invaluable opportunity for students to connect with their fathers or male role models - an opportunity that is often challenging to find amidst the demands of everyday life.

Commencement Mass
Commencement Mass
The relationship between Trinity College and St Mary's Parish is a fundamental part of our Catholic identity, connecting our school to its religious foundation and historical heritage.
To mark the beginning of the school year, our community gathered for two Commencement Masses on Tuesday 11 February—one for Years 10-12 in the morning and another for junior students in the afternoon. These celebrations provided a reflective and prayerful start to the year.
We were especially pleased to have Fr Andrew Hayes preside over his first Mass with the Trinity community. Drawing on his experience as a prison chaplain, he used the Gospel reading from the Book of Matthew to encourage students to recognise the dignity and worth of all people, regardless of their circumstances.
A highlight of the Mass was the welcome of new staff members, who were each presented with a candle inscribed with an inspirational quote from Blessed Edmund Rice:
Our Year 12 Student Leaders played key roles throughout both ceremonies, demonstrating outstanding leadership. The choir, led by Mrs Kerr, Mrs Glennen, and Mrs O’Connor, enriched the service with their musical talents, creating a beautiful and reverent atmosphere.
It was inspiring to see students and staff come together in faith, strengthening our sense of community as we embark on a new school year.

Students Gaining Industry Insights and Practical Experience
Students Gaining Industry Insights and Practical Experience
In recent weeks, a number of Trinity College students have begun their Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses marking an exciting new chapter in their educational journey. VET courses provide invaluable industry insights, hands-on practical experience, and essential workplace skills, and prepare students for successful careers in their chosen fields.
This year, students are attending various campuses to study a range of specialist VET courses. At South West TAFE in Colac, students have commenced courses in Building and Construction, Automotive, and Early Childhood Education & Care. At The Gordon in Geelong, students are gaining skills in Animal Care, Allied Health, Electrotechnology, and Beauty. And right here at Trinity College, students are getting theoretical knowledge and practical skills in Federation University’s Hospitality and Cookery courses.
By choosing to undertake VET courses, students are not only enhancing their knowledge and skills, but they are also building strong connections with industry professionals, gaining hands-on experience and becoming well prepared for the workforce. VET courses are an integral part of these students' career pathways and we look forward to celebrating their continued growth and success across the year.

A Heartwarming Performance for Mercy Aged Care Residents
A Heartwarming Performance for Mercy Aged Care Residents
Our 2025 music program has started with a delightful and memorable visit to Mercy Aged Care, as students Indee, Mason, and Charlie took the stage to entertain residents with a lively and diverse performance. The group showcased an impressive mix of folk, classical, musical theatre and even a bit of Elvis magic, offering something for everyone to enjoy.
Residents joined in the fun throughout the performance, clapping, singing along, and calling out song requests, creating an interactive and joyful atmosphere. It was clear that the afternoon brought smiles and a sense of connection to all in attendance as the music brought back fond memories and sparked lively conversations.
For students, this visit was an invaluable opportunity to build confidence and hone their performance skills in a real-world setting. The experience of performing in front of such a welcoming audience is one that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on their growth as artists. For the residents, the afternoon offered a chance to unwind and enjoy some lively entertainment. The music provided a sense of joy and community, reminding everyone of the power of music to bring people together.
We look forward to more visits like this throughout the year, where residents can continue to enjoy wonderful performances and students can continue to grow in their craft.

Instrumental Music Program
Instrumental Music Program
On Wednesday 12 February, an exciting instrumental tryout session took place with 80 eager Year 7 students taking up the opportunity to explore a variety of instruments including Woodwind, Brass and Strings. Students tried their hand at playing instruments and enjoyed performances by fellow Trinity College students, immersing themselves in the rich sounds and energy of the music. Performances were followed by informal chats where our new students gained insight and inspiration from their peers' musical journeys. As a result, many have decided to take up the challenge of learning a new instrument or revisiting one they had tried before, ready to dive deeper into the world of music.

Trinity College Colac Wellbeing
Trinity College Colac Wellbeing
At Trinity College Colac, we understand that wellbeing is nurtured through safe, supportive, and inclusive relationships within our community. Self-regulation is developed over time through countless experiences of co-regulation, beginning from birth.
Our Zones of Regulation model helps young people and their families better understand self-regulation using clear concepts, colours, and strategies. By fostering co-regulation, we empower students to build the skills needed for lifelong emotional awareness and resilience.

Tips for Supporting Self-Regulation
- All zones are okay – Avoid labelling zones as "good" or "bad." Every zone serves a purpose.
- Help your child recognise their zone – Support them in identifying how they feel and which zone they are in.
- Encourage self-awareness – Help your child understand their triggers and signs of dysregulation.
- Model and co-regulate – Demonstrate self-regulation strategies and provide a calming presence when needed.
- Aim for balance, not perfection – While the goal is to support students in staying or returning to the Green Zone, it’s important to recognise that moving through different zones is a natural part of daily life for everyone.

The program provides parents with a greater understanding of their teen’s emotional experiences while teaching specific skills that can assist in being supportive, empathic and staying connected with the young person. In the coming newsletter editions, we will share more information and practical tips about the different zones to support your understanding. Sustainability
Sustainability
With school routine back in full swing, so is our recycling routine. Undertaking the recycling duties at school, learning new processes and promoting the use of an expanded recycling system across 2025 has been our main Sustainability focus over the first few weeks of Term 1.
Recycling is essential for protecting our environment and conserving natural resources. By recycling, we reduce waste sent to landfills, decrease pollution, and save energy. It also helps preserve raw materials like trees, water, and minerals, which are crucial for producing everyday items. Recycling is an easy way for everyone to contribute to a cleaner environment and to show respect for our learning facilities. It is imperative that we encourage good recycling habits for students and staff and educate about knowledge of best practices.
This semester there are two classes of Year 8 students who are our primary assistants to help with emptying indoor bins for the weekly curbside collection and to oversee that the recycling bins are being used effectively. Not only are these students keenly pitching in to help our whole school, but these practical jobs also directly link to their Year 8 Religion class curriculum of ‘Covenant’; whereby God has called us to enter into right relationship with Him, each other and with our environment. Simple and real actions (like recycling) of care and respect for the environment align within right relationship, encouraging ourselves and others to be agents of stewardship and care.
This year we have introduced yellow ‘mixed’ recycling and green ‘FOGO’ (Food Organics and Garden Organics) bins.
The many links below highlight organisations who are environmental and/or governing bodies which guide Trinity in terms of correct reduce, re-use and recycling practices. Information within these links will answer almost all questions about the correct bins to use in our local area and provide interesting wider information about other sustainable practices. Observations of how our bins have been used lately and a variety of discussions with teachers and students highlight a real underuse of the green ‘FOGO’ bin. In essence, anything that grows (or once grew) belongs in the green-lid FOGO bins. Even if materials are food or water stained like used paper plates, oily fish and chip wrappers and wooden icy pole sticks.
What an amazing opportunity we have to maximize the potential of our existing organics bins and curbside collection!

The Wellbeing Barometer - 2025 (SchoolTV)
The Wellbeing Barometer - 2025 (SchoolTV)
The Wellbeing Barometer survey is an invaluable tool for schools, providing critical insights into the mental health and wellbeing of young people. This annual survey identifies areas of concern, highlights resilience and adaptability in students, and emphasises the importance of preventative strategies to promote positive outcomes.
Participation in this survey is strongly encouraged, as it offers a comprehensive view of students' experiences, challenges, and achievements. By capturing a detailed understanding of young people's experiences, the survey supports a tailored approach to enhancing their mental, emotional, and social wellbeing. It helps to identify strengths and areas for improvement, as well as pinpoint opportunities for early intervention.
The survey is part of an ongoing longitudinal study, and we encourage you to take a few moments to complete the survey for each of your children. Responses remain anonymous and should be based on your observations over the last 12 months. By working together, we can reduce the long-term impact of mental illness and make a meaningful difference to the lives of our young people for a brighter future.
